Accessing Money While Abroad

Students should rely on several sources of money (ATM/debit card, credit card, cash) to cover expenses while abroad. This will ensure that if one means for accessing funds fails, you will not be stranded without money. Also, the amount of money that can be accessed through any one source may be subject to limitations, requiring a second source.

ATMs are in most banks in Europe. Be sure to have an internationally valid PIN (typically 4 digits number) and check with your home financial institution about foreign ATM fees and conversion rates.

SAI does not recommend opening a local bank account because of the lengthy process and high cost. We recommend exchanging a small amount of money (approximately €200/£150) prior to your departure so that you don't have to search for local cash immediately upon arrival.
